An active performer and pedagogue in the New Orleans area, Kim Hickey began playing flute at the age of 9 in her elementary school’s band program. She continued playing through high school and college, tutoring younger students (whether they wanted it or not) and putting on clinics at local schools. She earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s in flute performance from the University of New Orleans (came “this” close to a Master’s degree in Geography).
Upon completion of her Master’s, she was awarded the graduate teaching assistantship to the University of Southern Mississippi to pursue her DMA in flute performance and pedagogy. But after three semesters she decided instead to join the distinguished ranks of The Doctoral Dropout.
After joining the DD club, she met fellow member Albinas Prizgintas (Juilliard), director of music at Trinity Episcopal Church and founder of the Trinity Artist Series and the annual Bach Around the Clock Marathon. She has been a fixture there ever since (believe me people, they’ve tried to get rid of her, she keeps coming back!) She continues to perform there and wherever else they’ll let her. She is often joined by collaborative pianist partner-in-crime, Amanda Wadsworth (not a DD member) or USM alumna, flutist/woodwind specialist, Kristina Havard (also not a DD member).
Lover of music, books and more comfortable with those of the 4-legged persuasion, she is especially fond of gadgets and technology and is more than slightly addicted to some forms of social media (ahem, Twitter). It only makes sense that she would not only be part of but instigated (who, me?) an ensemble on social media.
